From the Master Cleanse to juice cleanses to liver and gallbladder flushes, colonic’s and enemas what is helpful and what may be harmful? In today’s post I share the different ways cleanses work, offer a different perspective on detox and share info on what the best cleanse is.

So many cleanses and detox programs out there come with the promise that they contain the special magic ingredient or procedure that will undo years and decades of past habits and behaviors. These cleanses often take the position that specific foods, herbs and substances heal the body, this usually coming at a hefty price tag and/or indefinite subscription to their products. The reality is that there is no magic bullet, no substitution for living a consistent healthful holistic lifestyle.
Hygiene, aka the study of health, tells us that the body is self healing, self cleansing and contains infinitely more intelligence than even the most astute mind. All one needs do to tap into this natural disposition to heal is to provide the basic conditions for health.
A few of the major conditions include:
1. Whole ripe raw vital organic foods
2. Fresh air
3. Clean pure water
4. Enough restful sleep
5. Adequate exercises to help flush lymph
6. A positive outlook
7. Loving relationships with others and with self
One could take the position that specific foods / herbs heal but in reality they are simply providing the nutrients for the body to heal itself.
Ideally we would all live lifestyles that are healthy and “clean” enough to allow the body to efficiently detoxify from our daily activity and have a surplus of energy left over, unfortunately this is not the case. Most of us eat foods and live in environments that over burden the bodies ability to detoxify and thus we accumulate acidity in the body and slowly but surely develop degenerative diseases. Because of these factors it becomes infinitely important to understand and implement the factors involved in health creation that we can control, as stated above.
While the body is fully self cleansing there are two main methods we can utilize to consciously help facilitate a cleanse.
1. Stimulate; most cleanses / therapies use this method offering up special tonics, procedures and substances to stimulate specific organs to “detox” or work harder. This is akin to whipping a horse to run faster, they do not suddenly find extra energy instead such behavior exasperates and enervates.
2. Support; hygiene instead looks to simply support the bodies natural processes by providing the conditions for health and understands that the body always has its own agenda within the scope of healing and detoxification.
To me the stimulation path can be one of arrogance. At worst it comes from the perspective that we are smarter than the body and must urge it to do its job, at best it comes from a need to direct the body to heal in the order we want for our specific needs and preferences. The problem here is when we stimulate and force the body to react to the substances we are taking in there are other processes that are being slowed down or set aside.
I fully acknowledge that there can be times where stimulation / intellectual direction can be helpful. A classic example would be icing / elevating / binding a sprained ankle that we feel a need to get back on faster. This said IMHO the most efficient healing and recovery comes from trusting the bodies natural processes, providing the conditions for health and getting out of the way.
Many cleanses also utilize substances and food plans that are not maintainable nor conducive to long term health and a balanced relationship with food. Often cleanses and therapies create a binge and purge type relations ship with food bringing one to yoyo between a healthier lifestyle and a unbalanced more destructive lifestyle. This type of behavior can actually be harder on one than sticking to a moderately healthy lifestyle.
So what is the best cleanse? What is the solution?
As stated above, the best case scenario is to live a lifestyle that affords you the lowest toxic load and most energy to play, dance, sing and thrive in all the ways you would wish to so you never need go on a cleanse..
While this is the ideal as we know most of us are not in that boat and thus could use a mindful cleanse that actually sets us up to continue on a healthier / healthy lifestyle after the cleanse.
