To Supplement or Not?
Hope your enjoying this late summer heat n the freshness we are receiving. I am dripping in the best b.c nectarines I’ve ever had, buying by the box from the farmers markets for between 50 cents and 1 dollar a pound 🙂
I want to talk today on a controversial subject, supplementation. Its almost funny, often the “most unhealthy” people you see, who eat lots of junk food, drink lots or alcohol and soda’s most usually don’t even think about nutrition nor supplement much or at all. While sometimes these people are very obviously in poor health and shape, sometimes you see a active trim happy person with this lifestyle. On the other hand it seems often the more someone pays attention to their health, the better they eat, also the more they supplement. This seems strange to me on some levels, but is obvious when really examined.
When someone embarks on improving their health usually they do research in a multitude of places, are overwhelmed with information and often succumb to fear based marketing. It is shown that the most effective marketing is accomplished when a sense lack is created, thereby creating a need that of course the writer or funder of the article/study miraculously supply. Most often they are the only supplier of a “reliable” or “high quality” source. Fear and confusion based marketing is truly a art, one that has been studied, perfected, and designed to play directly with our strongest base needs, emotions, and fears. I urge you to follow the money, ask yourself if what you are reading or being told really makes since, and be especially aware when you feel your being acted upon out of fear.
You truly create what you put focus on, this is show again and again. You can be on the best diet in the world, but if your focus is on a feeling of lack, fuelled by fear, constantly feeling the need to supplement with this nutrient, that mineral, superfood ect, your going to exhibit that sense of lack in your body and mind Stress is a very real factor in your overall health, both self created and that which you are subjected to. Common sense would tell you that the better you eat, the less your need to supplement should be. It may be poignant to note that the absolute vast majority of nutritional imbalances are those of excess, not deficiency. Nutrients all work in concert with each other, enzymes, coenzymes, vitamins co vitamins, minerals, and their co minerals all packages in their proper complimentary ratios, absorption regulated by fiber inherent in the whole foods for optimal nutrition. Considering this and the fact that isolated nutrients can only in reality create further imbalances, contain lower quality nutrients that their fresh counterparts, and also contain fillers, binders, along with other substances which are undesirable for health, the rational for supplementation makes little to no sense.
I am not saying there is no cases or times where supplementation may be beneficial, If you are dying of a deficiency, bedridden, or showing clear signs of deficiency do what you feel is best. It may be helpful to note that most often deficiencies are caused by a absorption problem, not inadequate exposure. These issues most often self correct when digestion and therefor absorption is improved. This can best be accomplished by either a improved well combined raw diet or if dealing with a more serious issue, a proper supervised fast. Fasting is a natural healing gift older than we are, all animals and even kids when sick, injured or in emotional trauma, naturally fast, that is without fear based influence, more on that later. The medical, and in truth alternative health model recommends supplementing if there is even a inkling that there may be a deficiency or that it may help. The health model suggests taking away the cause of the symptoms of deficiency thereby allowing the body to naturally balance and regulate itself. On a healthy well combined diet, predominated by or made up entirely of fresh, ripe, raw, organic, whole, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, accompanied by regular vigorous activity, along with other healthy lifestyle factors supplementation need not be a concern.
I hope this clears some questions regarding supplementation, I look forward to any questions or comments which could in turn be answered in a future post.
