Now, let’s get back to the Spicy Monkey Smoothie Recipe!
This smoothie is not only quick, easy, and delicious but also one of the most nutrient-dense green smoothies out there. With just two ingredients, it utilizes a green that I think is vastly underutilized: arugula.
Some people find arugula to have a strong flavor, but when paired with the second ingredient – bananas – it’s a match made in heaven. Trust me, the combination is perfect and super delicious. I was skeptical when my good friend Fruity Lou (Louise Koch) told me about this recipe eight years ago, but after trying it, it quickly became one of my all-time favorites!
Nutritional Benefits of Arugula and Bananas
Arugula is one of the most nutritious greens per calorie out there. Measuring its nutritional value per calorie as well as per gram, arugula stands out as a powerhouse green. Also known as rocket, it is a nutrient-dense leafy green that’s often underrated in the world of raw foods. Its high nitrate content is known to help improve blood flow and lower blood pressure, making it heart-healthy. The vitamin K in arugula plays a crucial role in bone health and blood clotting, while calcium supports strong bones and teeth. Additionally, arugula is rich in antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress and inflammation, promoting overall well-being. The fiber in arugula aids digestion and keeps you feeling full, which is great for weight management and your microbiome.
On the other hand, Bananas are rich in potassium, vitamins, and natural sugars, providing energy and a creamy texture to the smoothie. Potassium is essential for maintaining proper heart function and regulating blood pressure. Bananas also contain vitamin C, which boosts the immune system, and vitamin B6, which supports brain health and helps produce serotonin, a mood-regulating neurotransmitter. The natural sugars in bananas provide a quick energy boost, making them a perfect ingredient for a pre-or post-workout smoothie.
The sweetness of the bananas mellows out the intense spicy flavor of the arugula, making it palatable and enjoyable. This combination not only creates a delicious flavor but also packs a powerful nutritional punch. Incorporating arugula and bananas into your diet gives your body a blend of essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support overall health and vitality. So, sip on this Spicy Monkey Smoothie and enjoy the benefits of these superfoods in every delightful gulp!
As a heads up,
This recipe is from my 21-Day Summer Meal Plan, which is available now as part of the Bundle Here.
Unless otherwise stated, all the recipes in the meal plan are 500 calories to help streamline planning. I’ve made a double portion for the video to make it 1,000 calories for my dinner. Below, I will share the original recipe.
Making the Spicy Monkey Smoothie
Spicy Monkey Smoothie
Arugula (.44 lb / 200 g)
4.5 Bananas (1.13 lb / 512 g)
Instructions:
Peel the bananas and add them to the blender.
Add the arugula to the blender, starting with half the amount and blending, then gradually add more to taste.
You might find that the more you enjoy this smoothie, the more arugula you’ll like!
If you have a Vitamix, use the tamper to push the arugula into the blades. If you don’t have a tamper, use celery sticks to help blend the arugula or add a little water if needed to get the blender going.
This smoothie is one of my favorites! The bananas’ natural sweetness perfectly balances the peppery, spicy kick of the arugula. Over time, you may find yourself enjoying more arugula in this delicious, nutrient-packed smoothie. Enjoy!
I hope you try out this Spicy Monkey Smoothie and love it as much as I do.
As Always
Wishing You Much
