Whoa, a Month of Home time with my family and friends, where to start!!!
One of the best parts of home time is getting back home with family. A good friend of the family has a farm you may have seen before (it’s where Alli’s horse Dandy lives!), and this year we planted an awesome garden out there and have been reaping the rewards. Tons of greens, tomatoes, carrots, and more are such a treat. Jacob, Alli, and I are out barefoot, connecting to the earth together and learning the joys of gardening. So sweet. While “weeding”, I noticed we were actually picking a variety of Purslane, one of my favorite greens. Sea Purslane is the highest in sodium of any terrestrial edible plant, and all varieties are quite savory and a great addition to stews, pasta, salads, and more. I love eating it right from the ground! We packed up tons of greens for a variety of fun feasts throughout the week.
Home time also means helping out the family. My dad got his ears cleaned through ear candling, his first time, and my second time helping someone through the process. Basically, you take a special ear-candling tube, stick it in, light it, and the warm suction draws the wax right out of the inner ear. I haven’t needed it myself as my ears have been remarkably clear since going raw. I only reach for a Q-tip once or twice a year, and even then, there is little to no wax. That said, I have seen and heard some amazing results with others, lots of wax coming out that looks completely different in color and texture from the melted candle, with a noticeable difference in hearing and overall feeling in the ear. My dad is now a total believer and plans to do it twice a year as recommended.
Another joy of home time is bouncing on the trampoline with Alijah and the kids. I used to take trampoline lessons back in the day and still remember doing a routine to “Janie’s Got a Gun,” ha. Alli and I show off with some flips and acrobatics. I love to jump! Trampolines are so fun and, honestly, one of the best forms of exercise around. The best workouts always feel like play. Charlize and I bounce around while I rep my awesome “Bananenhaus” (Banana House) t-shirt from the best band ever, Die Roten Punkte. Easily one of my favorite bands right now, and all the songs in the video are theirs. Check them out at DieRotenPunkte.com
Home time also means hitting up the PBR Auction, a wonderful place to score produce at below wholesale prices. PBR takes in all the surplus produce that grocers won’t accept and puts it up for sale at great prices three times a week. Searching out auctions and wholesalers to buy in bulk is honestly one of the best moves you can make for your food budget. Saskatoon can’t be the only city with something like this, so check out your city, dig deep, and find those gems! On one trip, I got organic blackberries and bananas, on another, organic strawberries at four bucks a case, and Crenshaw melons. Yes please.
My first Saskatoon Frickin’ Fruitluck of the year was a total success. Great friends, family, sweet fruits and veggies, all out to play, share, and skateboard. Garrett even elbow-dropped a watermelon, which was amazing. Let’s spread frickin fruitlucks around the globe! Start one up in your city, take photos or video, and I will include it in my content. I plan to host fruitlucks in every major city I visit, and I am so excited to share that with you all.
Home time is also when I get to really live in my Xero Shoes!! I have two pairs myself and have bought five pairs as gifts for family members who wanted them. These are beautifully minimal running, hiking, jogging, walking, and playing shoes that let you actually feel the earth beneath you. A thin Vibram Cherry sole, available in two thicknesses, is all that stands between you and the ground, helping you use your natural gait for better muscular development, posture, foot strength, endurance, and form. Since running and moving barefoot and in my Xeros, I have seen huge improvements in ankle, foot, and knee strength. I used to have ankle issues that affected my skating and made running feel like a liability. Now I can skate and run further, faster, and more consistently than ever in my life. Having the feet breathe is such a nice bonus, too, as is getting a little tan on the old feet. I simply love them, and at around $20 to $25 a pair, I genuinely cannot recommend them highly enough.
Off to Beate Epp’s amazing organic farm for the Saskatoon Monthly Raw Food Potluck, headed by the illustrious Deanna Litz of LightLiving.ca. Simply a rawsome time filled with great people and delicious raw food. So excited for more of these.
Back to the auction where I pick up two cases of organic bananas, Chiquita from Ecuador and bio bananas from Peru. Time for a taste test to find out which reigns supreme as the best banana!
Off to Rotary Park for a free yoga class in the sun put on by Cory Neufeld of The Better Good (my favorite eco-conscious shop) and Ryan Leier of One Yoga (my favorite yoga studio). After a fun class with friends, new and old, we enjoyed a mini fruitluck and crowned the bio bananas as the creamiest and sweetest of the bunch. Biodynamic farming for the win.
Last but definitely not least, I picked up a case of cherries, part Bing and part Rainier, to celebrate my mom and dad’s 40th wedding anniversary. I get a little loud in the video about how much I love cherries, and Johnny Cash, and I regret nothing.
The taste test puts the dark red Bing cherries at the top as the crowd favorite!
Hope you really enjoyed this home time recap. Next up, we head into New York Madness and the Woodstock Fruit Festival!
As Always
Wishing You Much
