Now, let’s get into the truth about fruit, fat, fruitarianism, and what it really takes to thrive on a raw vegan lifestyle.

The Truth About Fruit: Busting the Biggest Myths

The truth about fruit is that it’s often misunderstood, both inside and outside the raw vegan community. For years, fruit has been blamed for everything from blood sugar spikes to weight gain and even tooth decay. But when you look at the science, the lived experience of long-term raw foodists, and the way our closest primate relatives eat, the truth about fruit is much more nuanced, and much more positive, than most people realize.

Fruit Is Not the Enemy

One of the biggest myths I see is the fear of fruit. People worry about sugar, insulin spikes, and cravings. But the truth about fruit is that, when eaten as part of a balanced, low-fat, whole-food diet, it’s one of the most hydrating, nutrient-dense, and healing foods you can eat, that can actually reverse type 2 diabetes in short order. Fruit is packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, and water, all things your body needs to thrive. In fact, fruit comes as close to being our perfect food as one food group can get, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we should eat it to the exclusion of everything else.

After over 21 years on a raw vegan path, I can say that fruit has been central to my healing, energy, and performance as a professional skateboarder, chef, and coach. The truth about fruit is that it fuels not just your body, but also fills your mind and spirit with Mother Nature’s love.

The Fat Myth: It’s All About Balance

In our interview, Michael and I explored the fat myth, the notion that one should either avoid fat at all costs or, conversely, that high-fat raw diets are optimal. The truth about fruit is that it works best when paired with a moderate, balanced intake of healthy fats. Excessive fat, especially when combined with a high intake of fruit, can slow down digestion and affect blood sugar levels. However, a moderate amount of fat, 7-15% of total calories, from whole sources, such as seeds, avocados, or even durian, can actually help you absorb nutrients, provide more caloric and nutritional density, and leave you feeling more satisfied.

I explained that food combining rules aren’t as black and white as some claim. While it’s true that mixing large amounts of fat with sweet fruit can slow digestion, while small amounts, like a tablespoon of hemp or chia seeds in a smoothie, are usually well tolerated by most people. The truth about fruit is that it’s not just about what you eat, but how much, how often, and what else is going on in your life (like your activity level, stress, and overall health).

The Fruitarian Myth: Why Greens and Variety Matter

Another key topic in “Raw Truths” is the fruitarian myth, the idea that eating only fruit is the most natural or optimal diet for humans. The truth about fruit is that, while it’s an amazing food group, we do best with a variety of fruits, both sweet and non-sweet, leafy greens, some vegetables, as well as smaller amounts of fatty foods. Just like our closest genetic cousins, the bonobo, our bodies are designed and classified as frugivores, not strict fruitarians. It’s interesting to note that none of the great apes or primates are true fruitarians. We need the minerals, fiber, and alkalinity that greens and veggies provide to thrive truly, especially when “coming off” a more acidic SAD lifestyle.

In my own journey and through coaching hundreds of others, I’ve seen that people who attempt to go 100% fruitarian for the long term are far more likely to struggle with maintaining energy, muscle mass, healthy hair, skin, and teeth, as well as achieving long-term vibrant health. The truth about fruit is that it should be the foundation of a raw vegan diet, but not the whole story. In my opinion, it’s essential to understand the distinction between attempting to live according to a well-meaning philosophy and adopting a well-balanced, tested, and nature-derived lifestyle.

The Science and Spirit of Fruit

All of this said, I really want to emphasize that I am a champion of fruit, a cheerleader, in fact! The truth about fruit is also about how amazing it is, and it makes you feel. Fruit is high-vibing, hydrating, uplifting, and deeply satisfying when consumed in sufficient quantities and with high-quality produce. It’s not just about the nutrients, it’s about the joy, the life force, the connection to nature, and the simplicity it brings to your life. I always encourage people to listen to their bodies, experiment, and find what works for them. The truth about a fruit-based raw food lifestyle is that it’s a journey, not a dogma.

With so much conflicting information out there, it’s easy to get lost in the noise. The truth about fruit, fruitarianism, fat, and raw veganism is that there’s no cookie-cutter one-size-fits-all answer for everyone at every moment. However, by focusing on an abundance of the whole, ripe, fresh foods you love, staying open to learning, and connecting with others on the path, you can discover your version of vibrant health.

If you’re ready to cut through the confusion and make real, lasting changes, I invite you to check out my Raw Vegan Lifestyle Success System. I haven’t run this as a group in four years, and I truly believe it’s the most complete, actionable, and supportive program I’ve ever created and can offer.
