Exploring the Microbiome: A Fresh Perspective with Dr. Douglas Graham
In the world of nutrition, the microbiome has become a buzzword, especially among raw food educators and health enthusiasts. Many experts today emphasize the importance of a diverse microbiome, often advocating for more variety in both the microbes in our gut and the foods we consume at each meal to supercharge your microbiome. This approach has led some long-term raw foodists and good friends to reintroduce certain cooked foods into their diets, all to enhance gut diversity. The idea is that a greater variety of microbes leads to better health outcomes, a concept that has gained traction through mainstream sources and popular books on the subject.
Books like “The Microbiome Solution” by Dr. Robynne Chutkan and “The Good Gut” by Justin and Erica Sonnenburg emphasize the need for diversity in the gut flora. They suggest that consuming a wide range of plant-based foods, and sometimes even fermented or cooked foods, can promote a richer and more varied microbiome and thus enhance your overall health. Many modern health experts echo this view, arguing that the more diverse your diet, the more robust your gut health will be, but is this always the case, and is it necessarily true in the context of a raw food diet?
As you will learn, this “more is better” approach isn’t the only perspective out there. In the above video, I had the incredible opportunity to sit down with Dr. Douglas Graham, the author of the revolutionary “80/10/10 Diet,” to explore a different viewpoint that resonates deeply with the principles of natural hygiene and a nature-based approach to health.
Dr. Graham challenges the mainstream narrative by suggesting that the quality and simplicity of the foods we eat over the seasons may be more crucial than the sheer variety at any given meal, day, week or longer. According to him, and supported by the views of natural hygiene and nature’s example, the microbiome and health in general is best served by a varied seasonal diet that is simple, whole, fresh, ripe, raw, and as close to nature as possible at each meal. This perspective aligns with my personal experience and the Four Pillars of Truth, guiding my health journey.
In our conversation, Dr. Graham explains how the principles of the 80/10/10 diet tie into gut health in a way that can make adhering to a raw food diet more effortless and enjoyable. By focusing on a seasonal diet that is predominantly or all raw, low-fat, and based on whole, fresh foods, he explains that we can support a healthy microbiome without needing to overcomplicate our approach with too many different foods at any given time or reintroducing cooked items.
This discussion is particularly relevant as the conversation around gut health continues to evolve, with new studies and theories emerging regularly. While the mainstream message often promotes “more diversity is always better,” Dr. Graham offers another grounded, science and nature-based alternative that prioritizes simplicity over complexity, to supercharge your microbiome in a way that echos the sentiment of my PeaceLovenSeasonalFruit moto.
