Raw Vegan Perfection: When the Pursuit of Purity Becomes a Stumbling Block

One of the most important and underspoken conversations in the raw vegan world. Kiko Miwa of Namado joins me to talk about what happens when the drive for dietary perfection stops serving you and starts holding you back.

Kiko has been on this journey since 2004, the same year I went fully raw, and she brings something to this conversation that is rare: the willingness to talk honestly about the hard parts. Not just the wins. The years of searching, the detox cycles that did not deliver, the moments of doubt, and the deeper gifts that came through all of it. Perfection Is Not Protection

When most people discover the raw vegan lifestyle, especially if they discover it after years of poor health or disconnection, there is an understandable pull toward wanting to do it perfectly in the sense of a static perfection. The cleaner the better. The more intense the protocol, the faster the healing. The more stuff that comes out, the purer you must be getting. Raw vegan perfection feels like the answer to everything.

Kiko lived that. She describes going through repeated cleansing cycles, signing up for fasting protocols led by practitioners who were not listening to her individual experience, and pushing through symptoms that were signals rather than signs of progress. She was doing everything she was told was right. She was still suffering. And the framework she had been given told her that meant she must be doing something wrong.

That is the trap. When the framework cannot be questioned, the person always becomes the problem. And for someone genuinely trying to heal, that is an incredibly isolating and damaging place to be.

The Detox Cycle That Never Ends

One of the most important things we got into was the idea of endless detox culture, the belief that if you just cleanse enough, fast enough, restrict enough, you will finally arrive at some state of purity where disease cannot touch you. This is one of the most seductive ideas in alternative health and also one of the most harmful when taken to an extreme.

I shared the example of a practitioner’s mentor who had been following an intensive cleansing approach for over 40 years, dozens of fasts, and was still passing what they believed to be mucoid plaque. At no point did it seem to register that if the same stuff keeps coming out after four decades of extreme cleansing, maybe the premise needs to be questioned rather than the effort doubled.

Mucoid plaque as a concept is a misconception. The body is not lined with decades of hardened waste preventing all absorption and causing all disease. What people see during aggressive fasting and herbal protocols is largely the result of the protocol itself, not evidence of something that was always there. The body is self-healing and self-cleansing given the right conditions. It does not need to be forced into crisis states repeatedly to do its job.

That does not mean fasting has no place. It means context, individual history, and genuine professional support matter enormously. If a practitioner is not listening to your specific history, experience and symptoms and telling you any deviation means you are doing it wrong, that is a red flag worth taking seriously.

What Raw Vegan Perfection Actually Costs

Kiko put it simply and powerfully: she had empty years because of this. Years of being bedridden, not because the raw vegan lifestyle failed her, but because the obsessive pursuit of raw vegan perfection layered on top of the lifestyle did. Under-eating in the name of cleansing. Restricting calories in the name of purity. Ignoring her own inner signals in favor of an external protocol that promised guaranteed results.

This is something I see too and it is one of the reasons the bundle and my own teaching have always centered on abundance rather than restriction. If you are not eating enough, you are not getting enough nutrition. It really is that direct. And if the lifestyle feels like a constant deprivation in service of some future purified state, it is going to be very hard to sustain and very hard to thrive within.

The raw vegan lifestyle works best when it is chosen from a place of self-love and genuine desire rather than fear of what happens if you are not pure enough. Those are fundamentally different energies and they produce fundamentally different results.

On Dr. Brooke Goldner’s Protocol and Good Better Best

Kiko asked me about Dr. Brooke Goldner’s hyper-nourishment protocol, which is omega-3 rich, raw, and whole food plant based but higher in fat than the 80/10/10 approach. It is helping a lot of people and I want to be clear about how I see it.

There is a good, better, best framework that I think applies here. Dr. Goldner’s protocol is light years ahead of the standard diet and most other approaches. It is genuinely nourishing, it is raw, and it can be a valuable protocol for people who need to prioritize brain health and recovery pathways through higher omega-3 intake. I would never discourage someone from it if it genuinely resonates, fits their dietary preferences with them and they are seeing results.

Where it differs from a lower fat species-specific approach is in the fat ratio. Higher omega-3 fats do have a different metabolic profile than saturated or excess omega-6 fats and can be consumed in slightly higher amounts without the same insulin impact. But the lower fat approach is not saying more is better. It is saying enough is enough, and if omega-6 intake is kept appropriately low, the ratio takes care of itself naturally. That is the model that nature provides and the one that long-term evidence and comparative anatomy consistently support.

The Gift on the Other Side of the Hard Part

Kiko ended with something that has stayed with me. The bigger the mountain in front of you, the bigger the gift on the other side. She went through what she went through for a reason. It gave her something to say that needed to be said. Namado 2 exists because she lived it honestly enough to write it down and trust this community enough to share it.

That is what raw vegan perfection, pursued obsessively, ultimately cannot give you: the grounded, compassionate, lived wisdom that comes from actually walking through the hard parts with honesty. The lifestyle is not about arriving at some pure untouchable state. It is about nourishing yourself so deeply and so consistently that you have the energy, clarity, and presence to fully live.
